The haversine formula calculates the great-circle distance between two points on the surface of a sphere, not the straight-line (ie: through the sphere) distance.
For anything useful the great-circle distance is what you want.

I will reword. I use the word straight line due to the fact people in business never think about going through a sphere. They think point A to point B, but I believe your correction needs to be made in the description. Thank man.
